Geodigital Inclusion and Territorial Management of Family-based Production Units: creation of a sustainability index for the Amazônia biome

Photo: Borges, Wardsson Lustrino
The aim of this project is to create a multicriteria sustainability index for family-based agricultural units in Amazônia. This effort is performed with participation of farmers, their children and technicians, and combines theoretical knowledge and methods with local experiences. To fulfil this purpose, the project's team will be promoting workshops in each of the states that make up the Brazilian Amazon region, with the aim of defining economic, social, environmental and governance indicators. Participants range from young students enrolled in "Escolas da Família" (Family Schools) to technical assistance professionals and extension agents. After the indicators are defined, a Territorial Management System will be produced and made available by means of an easy-to-use geodigital application. Then, courses will be offered on-site at the communities which participated in the workshops. On-line versions of the courses will also be made available. The project intends to empower the farmers, specially young ones, to manage their farms using indicators produced by themselves. Thus, the project intends to contribute to the communities' autonomy, by involving people in their own social inclusion process, and also to validate an education method that uses computer resources and may be replicated in other social and geographical contexts in Brazil.
