The goal of the project is to learn the capacity of the current production systems and of alternative technologies focused on carbon accumulation and sequestration in the soil and on reducing (direct or indirect) greenhouse gas - GHG - emissions. Such knowledge is essential for the investigation and foresight of future scenarios and for the planning of public policy to encourage the adoption of global warming mitigation practices. This project comprises the investigation and analysis of grain pr Status: Completed Start date: Sat Sep 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2012 |
The project aimed to quantify carbon stocks and assess the impact of human activity on changes in carbon stocks in the Amazon Forest. In that region, in response to the potential climatic effects of deforestation, policy makers have paved the way for policy changes that drive emission reductions by reducing deforestation and forest degradation and the improvement of forest carbon stocks. The project was part of the “Sustainable Landscapes” program of technical cooperation from USAID and the U.S. Status: Completed Start date: Mon Aug 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2011 |
In last the two decades, the melon agribusiness in Brazil has expanded nine times, reaching a production that is estimated at 500,000 tons per year and is concentrated in the Northeast. Since 2007, melons have become the main national fruit in volume of exports, and in 2008 Brazil was the second top world exporter. Nearly all melon cultivars planted in the Northeast are imported, and hence there is demand for more adapted ones, as the cultivars available were generally developed in soil and clim Status: Completed Start date: Sun Apr 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2012 |
Embrapa Gado de Leite coordinates participatory rural development projects in 16 communities in nine municipalities of the State of Minas Gerais – i.e. Lima Duarte, Santana do Garambéu, Santa Rita de Ibitipoca, Pedro Teixeira, Ibertioga, Carvalhos, Bocaina de Minas and Alagoa, which have smallholder milk production as the main activity generating employment and income - and the Quilombola (Afro-Brazilian Settlement) Colônia do Paiol, in the municipality of Bias Fortes. Among the pathogens infecting grapevines, viruses particularly stand out due to the damages they cause and the degeneration (loss of vigor) of the plants they affect throughout the years, resulting in reduced production and quality of grapes. This could even economically impair this activity. In specific combinations of rootstock/cultivar and viral species, grapevine viral diseases can be latent and could thus go undetected and be successively propagated, resulting in high levels of infection in Status: Completed Start date: Sun Apr 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2012 |
The project “Technology transfer to consolidate low carbon emission agriculture in Tocantins” was carried out to consolidate an agriculture based in low carbon emission technologies, sharing the knowledge in conservation agriculture through capacity building of scientists, agronomists, extension workers and consultants, which were then capable to transfer low carbon technologies such as no-till system, degraded pastures recovery and integrated crop-livestock-forestry systems to farmers of all st Status: Completed Start date: Sun Apr 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2012 |
Brazil annually consumes 10.5 million tons of wheat, half of which is produced in the country, which entails an approximate outlay of 800 million dollars in wheat imports. The high cost of production and the difficulties in the obtention of cultivars with technological qualities that meet market requirements are among the main limiting factors for the Brazilian wheat production chain. Out of all the cultivars available from all Brazilian breeders, about two thirds were created from germplasm ...Status: Completed Start date: Sun Apr 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2012 |

One of the largest livestock problems in Southern Brazil has been the scantiness of varieties of forage species more adapted to this region. In addition, due to global warming and the demand for increased productivity with reduced use of inputs, there is a need of studies on germplasm tolerance to abiotic stresses such as drought, and the evaluation of symbiotic organisms to promote biological nitrogen fixation in grasses. Thus, this project aimed to develop improved populations of some of the m Status: Completed Start date: Sun Jan 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2012 |
In recent decades, there has been a reduction in the consumption of some animal products due to the search for healthy products. In the case of dairy products, fat is an important source of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a set of bioactive isomers, some with beneficial effects for human health, for example, in the prevention of diseases such as Alzheimer's. The manipulation of ruminant diet has been the used alternative to change milk composition and, thus, producing CLA-rich milk products.
