Brazil is one of the world's largest producers of agricultural products. However, there is still a persistent international perception that the country's production comes at the expense of significant environmental damage, which does not reflect the diverse reality of Brazilian agriculture. Sustainability indicators proposed by international organizations such as FAO/UN and OECD repeatedly rank Brazil among the countries with the worst performance when they disregard the fact that the country has been undergoing a true productive revolution based on the sustainable intensification of land use, driven by a solid technological base. The issue of sustainability has definitively entered the national agricultural agenda and, to achieve this, the country needs to consolidate and disseminate the benefits of its agro-environmental policies. In this context, this project aims to develop a digital environment for obtaining and organizing multi-source data, automatic calculation and dissemination of agro-socioenvironmental indices and indicators to assess the sustainability of Brazilian agriculture. Among others, the indicators proposed and recommended by the OECD will be considered, open to the integration of indicators from other international and national institutions and sectors linked to agribusiness such as the 2030 Agenda/SDGs. The digital environment will provide transparency to the sustainability indices and indicators of Brazilian agriculture, with the main advantage of allowing the evaluation of the agronomic and environmental efficiency of production systems. It will imply a real view of the country's true agro-socioenvironmental performance, in a georeferenced manner, which, with the advancement of data production and its interpretations, may come to qualify rural properties and agroindustries through their agro-environmental performance and the responsibility of farmers and rural entrepreneurs. Methodological procedures for estimating agro-environmental indicators proposed by the OECD will be validated and, when necessary, the necessary adjustments will be proposed. Propositively, the following will be considered: a) an indicator of agricultural sustainability (IS_Agro) as an objective measure of the rational use of natural resources and agricultural inputs; and b) an agribusiness corporate index (ISE_Agro), modeled for agribusiness production chains and reflecting the degree of commitment of the rural producer or agricultural enterprise regarding social responsibility and environmental conservation through the rational use of natural resources. It will also serve as a promoter of good socio-environmental sustainability practices, consolidating the ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) concept. Once available, the IS_Agro Module will provide, in a digital environment, the various sustainability indicators and indices that describe the various aspects of the agro-socioenvironmental reality and the environmental, social and economic efficiency of Brazilian agriculture, thus supporting the various decision-making bodies and sectoral planning and management processes. According to researchers, the information made available on the platform will be of fundamental importance for the various strategic studies of sectoral organizations and agencies involved in Brazilian agribusiness, and the development of the IS_Agro Module as a digital environment associated with the Brazilian Agriculture Observatory will constitute a valuable solution, contributing to sectoral policies and planning and management processes aimed at building a sustainable agriculture and the correct positioning of the country on the international scene. The project is funded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) through a Decentralized Execution Term (TED No. 450/2021, 23/12/2021).
