LBB - Bioinformatics Laboratory

Research lines

Genomic bioinformatics (assembly, annotation and comparison of genomes and transcriptomes; analysis of repeats and transposable elements; phylogenetic analysis; analysis of variants and molecular markers; discovery and characterization of genes, promoters and regulators); systems development and data processing for bioinformatics (analysis pipelines; web systems; manipulation of massive biological data by means of computer programming).

Structure and equipment

The laboratory has 50 m2 in two separate rooms. In the support room, for advanced users, there are 6 desktops, and in the main lab (37 m2), for bioinformaticians and developers, there are currently 5 high-performance mobile workstations with 2 monitors (HP EliteBook Folio 1040 G1) and 1 partner desktop. All of them with access to the LBB servers, organized in their own rack at the Unit's CPD. In the rack, 5 servers are installed, 3 of them (HP ProLiant DL785 G5, HP ProLiant DL585 G7 and Dell PowerEdge R930) used directly in bioinformatics analysis and 2 (HP ProLiant DL380 G5 and HP ProLiant DL380 G7) used as a base for different virtual machines (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Bacula, web server, Zabbix, file server, reverse proxy, GitLab). Also in the rack, 2 storages (HP StorageWorks MSA60 and HP P2000 G3 MSA Array System), tape backup system (IBM System Storage TS 3100 Tape Backup LTO-3) and KVM for local connection with the equipment.
