Technology Transfer to Promote the Development of Competitiveness, Distribution and Marketing of Yuca Products in Moju, Baixo Tocantins, Pará

The Lower Tocantins region, PA, presents agricultural traits that integrate both traditional and modern practices; the small farming's main activities are concentrated on yuca cultivation and flour processing. In the county of Moju, the productivity obtained by the great majority of small farmers oscillates between 9 and 16 tons/hectare, once great part of them do not select propagation material, do not control weed growth and don't cultivate using adequate spacing. Moreover, other common farming practices during field preparation include felling and slash-and-burn, and the farmers tend to abandon the land after two successive crops. In this region, the flour still is the main produced good, although its commercial value remains humble, presenting high variability throughout markets, being produced in precarious facilities, with little infra-structure and hygienic/sanitary conditions. In addition to these difficulties, the producers posses little information on how to run the business, such as marketing strategies, points of sale throughout the county, and mostly any information that might help in the process of marketing the production. This project aims to promote the disclosure and the transfer of technology which focuses on boosting production of yuca roots which are economic viable for family farming, increase income by means of raising flour quality, while respecting the environment, promoting social inclusion and decreasing inequality. This project's direct beneficiaries will be family farmers belonging to the communities from Trevo, Aliança do Norte, Nova União, Belo Horizonte and Bom Futuro in the county of Moju, Pará, with focus on producers who own flour houses, in sum, 152 families. In order to transfer developed technologies, a "Train & Visit" method will be adapted, uniting I and II Multipliers, allowing the formation of only one team of them, composed by 10 local technical assistance technicians and 24 family farmers appointed by the communities. This group of multipliers will participate in the entire training process by means of instauration and conduction of demonstrating units, courses, lectures and field days, and later on, dissemination among family farmers that will participate in the project. Experiments will be conducted in order to select, evaluate and transfer genotypes/cultivares with superior agronomical traits that allow higher productivity. The demonstrating units will test technological processes and practices, run courses, lectures, field days, production of print material and videos with proper language as instruments of training and disclosure of knowledge to multiplying agents and family farmers which will be subject to seven action plans: Management, Validation of Embrapa Generated Genotypes, Technology Demonstration, Training of Multiplying Agents, Marketing, Technology Transfer Communication, Monitoring and Evaluation of Results. The main expected results are: increase on average production on yuca culture from 16 to 25 tons/hectare; increase on average income from R$500,00 to R$1000,00; standardization and improvement of flour quality produced by small rural producers; identification of market sites in order to facilitate the sales; development of a team of trained multiplying agents as references to tend to technological demands of lower Tocantins' yuca farmers.
