BRS Xingu is a protected blackberry cultivar that was developed for mild winter conditions. It results from crossing the Brazilian cultivar Tupy with an American cultivar. It features late ripening, which allows an extension of the harvest period for an average of two weeks. In assessments over six harvests, it also produced an average yield of 800g more berries per plant than the Tupy cultivar. Plants offer erect growth and average tillering, with low need for cold. It blooms in September and October, with harvest from mid-November to early January in the conditions of Pelotas, RS, Brazil, where it was developed.
On average, berries weigh 8-10g and their flavor balances sugar and acidity. Their firmness ensures good post-harvest conservation.
In Brazil, BRS Xingu is recommended for the states of Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, in the Southeast; and Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, in the South. But it can also be cultivated in the conditions in Guatemala and Mexico. The cultivar is aimed at family farms, traditional communities and the processing sector. BRS Xingu can be used for the trade of fresh berries or to make sweets, especially jams, dried foods, juices, yogurts and ice cream.
