Currently there is much discussion about the environmental impact of livestock and agricultural activities. The Brazilian livestock sector in particular has been criticized for causing emission of significant amounts of greenhouse gases. Among the various greenhouse gases, livestock production practices contribute significantly to the emission of enteric methane, which can become a non-tariff barrier to exports of animal products. In this regard, research has pointed to the need to develop methodologies and generate specific databases for livestock production systems for each region. This project aimed to generate conceptual advances on enteric methane diagnosis and mitigation strategies in ruminants in Brazil. This project was funded by CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development) and Embrapa and contributed to the consolidation of the RumenGases research network with the participation of 75 researchers and 24 institutions. The project contributed additional resources to the Project Component RumenGases of the PECUS Research Network. So this effort was important for the installation of a center of excellence for enteric methane evaluation of the Multiuser Complex of Bioefficiency and Sustainability in Livestock,, allowing the generation of enteric methane emission data of the main ruminant livestock species. This project also enabled the development of technologies, products and processes with the potential to contribute to the mitigation of enteric methane. Those are results that have potential use for guiding the public policies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture.
