In Brazil, milk production is practiced by more than one million farmers, mostly smallholders, who have in pastures and swards for green chop the most important sources for cattle feeding. Dairy agribusiness plays a significant role in food supply for the domestic market, in the generation of jobs and income for the population and in recent years has also become increasingly important in the Country’s export line. The intensification of animal production systems demands the use of forage species with higher productivity and nutritional value, since in these systems animals of greater genetic potential are used, thus requiring feeds of better nutritional value. One of the most economical alternatives to improve herd nutrition is through the use of more productive and better quality forage crops. Among the forage species that can contribute to solving these problems, elephant grass, which has high productive capacity, good dry matter quality and versatility of uses, can be used as chopped green, hay, silage or under rotational grazing. Elephant grass is one of the best tropical grasses in terms of consumption, digestibility and protein content, providing excellent responses in milk and meat production. The objective of the project is to develop seed-propagated elephant grass cultivars and obtain management and use information of these materials. Obtaining new seed-propagated elephant grass cultivars will promote greater safety and efficiency in animal exploration systems, contributing to solve the problem of feed deficiency in times of reduced availability and the demand of the intensive systems of animal production for more productive cultivars with better quality, as well as the demands of family farmers. This will result in higher revenues for the farmer by increasing the quantity and quality of milk and meat produced.
