Peach Palm ( Bactris gasipaes, Palmae) was domesticated by the first peoples who developed food production systems in the Amazon, and possibly in other distribution areas of their forest relatives. Currently, this palm tree possesses great economical projection as a source of high quality heart-of-palm. In addition, the commercialization of peach-palm fruits represents great commercial importance in the state of Pará, once it is an income source for traditional small farmers/producers.

Consumers, however, don’t always have access to fruits with the desired traits. This is a result of the fact that producers generally use non-selected seeds, and also because research hasn’t yet developed genetic material (cultivares). Thusly, this project aims to develop technologies which aim to promote peach-palm agricultural competitiveness, for heart of palm and fruits, by means of individual specimens’ selection and offspring which can be of potential use as material destined to commercial planting, and which can tend to the demands of producers, wholesalers and consumers. /n
