The main environmental problems associated with the waste produced in intensive pig farming are its high organic load, high amount of nutrients, the presence of some metallic species and of micro-organisms, some of which are known pathogenic agents. Sustainability of traditional cultivation systems (slash-and-burn) depends especially on long periods of set-aside in order to reestablish the stock of the soil's nutrients and raw organic material used and/or lost during the agricultural period.
