Bovine mastitis is considered the main disease of dairy herds in the world, causing the greatest economic losses to the dairy sector. In Brazil, production losses caused by mastitis are estimated between 12 and 15%, accounting to more than three billion liters of milk per year. In addition, mastitis poses risks to public health, due to the possibility of contamination of milk with antibiotic residues or with microorganisms and their toxins. The high frequency of mastitis pathogens resistant to t Status: Completed Start date: Wed Jul 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2015 |
Cattle farming is one of the most important activities of Brazilian agribusiness. Brazil is the world's largest beef exporter, holds the world's largest commercial herd, and is the world's third largest producer and consumer of beef and the world's seventh largest milk producer, with about 4% of the world's total. In spite of its large overall production, Brazilian cattle farming remains low in productivity, indicating a great potential for improvement and expansion of this sector of the economy Status: Completed Start date: Tue Jan 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2008 |
Proteins found in cow's milk are one of the main sources of childhood allergies and can affect up to 7% of children. A more common allergen is beta-lactoglobulin (BGL), which makes up more than 50% of whey protein and is absent in human milk. Hypoallergenic cow's milk can be obtained by treating the milk, but this can result in residual antigenicity and alter the taste of the milk. Additionally, prices are 10-15x higher than conventional milk. The bovine BGL gene is located on chromosome 11 and Status: Completed Start date: Tue Jan 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2019 |
The insects of the order Lepidoptera are the main pests affecting the crop of corn and can cause up to 34% reductions in production. The control of these pests is achieved primarily through the use of chemical insecticides, a system that brings negative effects to man, animals and environment. The use of biological control in pest management has emerged as an alternative to minimize these effects of the application of synthetic chemical insecticides, preserving the natural environment and the ...Status: Completed Start date: Mon Oct 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2012 |
Dairy farming is one of the most important economic activities in the agribusiness of the State of Minas Gerais, which is the largest milk producer in Brazil (28% of production). The dairy production chain is one of the most important in the state, employing labor, generating revenues of around R $ 2.4 billion/year and guaranteeing income for a large part of the population. However, most properties have low productivity due to several factors related to the herd, such as health, genetic potentia Status: Completed Start date: Tue Apr 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2008 |
The proposal presents an innovative solution, which is to validate candidate drought tolerance genes through genetic transformation (cisgeny) for the development of a banana variety with efficient use of water and a case study with CRISPR/cas9 via gene knock-out PDS (phytoene desaturase) as a model for the species. Brazil leads the research on reproduction of forage plants, but faces as a challenge the low diversity of pastures, mainly formed by apomictic plants. Apomixia - asexual reproduction by seeds - is an area of biotechnology with great potential to optimize the genetic improvement of these species, as it develops genetic materials and procedures for plant cloning by the direct use of seeds. This project proposes the determination of strategies to regulate the genes associated with the mode of repro Status: Completed Start date: Mon Jun 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2015 |
Recent evidence from observational studies and controlled clinical trials indicates that milk fat, although predominantly saturated, has neutral or positive effects on cardiometabolic health. Such benefits have been attributed to the complex and unique chemical nature of milk fat, which contains several compounds potentially beneficial to health, such as butyric acid (C4:0), vaccenic acid ( trans-11 C18:1), rumenic acid ( cis--9, trans-11 CLA), oleic acid ( cis-9 C18 ...
