Pepper (Capsicum spp.) is a high-yield commodity in Togo(Maatman, and the Al., 2011). The local pepper varieties are preferred and widely consumed, but there are no commercial seeds available in the market, or a Capsicum breeding program in Togo. Farmers themselves perpetuate the local varieties by collecting seeds of commercial fruits for the next sowing. Through a participatory research approach, this project aims at: 1) Selecting two local red pepper varieties and two bell pepper varieties th Status: Completed Start date: Mon Jun 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2015 |
The changes in climate behavior will probably bring changes to the hydrological cycle. As a result, these variations will probably affect crop development, crop production, and water consumption. Status: Completed Start date: Tue Jan 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2013 |
Peppers of the Capsicum genus are cultivated in every Brazilian state, especially in Goiás, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Ceará, Bahia, and Sergipe states, having a total estimated area of 5,000 hectares and a production of about 75,000 tons per year. The cultivation of peppers and bell peppers in Brazil has a strong family base and social importance since this activity is carried out predominantly by smallholder farmers and it is the main source of income for such families. Despite chili pepper bein ... Status: Completed Start date: Thu Jan 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2015 |
Bananas are one of Brazil's main agricultural products, having great economical significance. With a production reaching over five million tons annually, the fruit is a source of food for millions of people around the world. However, the plantations have been facing diseases and plagues which reduce the productive cycle once the local farmers are oblivious to certain agricultural practices. In the Amazon, the need to increase the crops is hindered by the lack of quality genetic strains for disse Status: Completed Start date: Sun Apr 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2007 |
Historically, the agricultural activities in the northeast of Pará have been concentrated in the hands of small farmers and family-based workforce, who dedicate themselves almost exclusively to subsistence farming with focus on yuca (Manihot esculenta), corn and caupi-beans (Vigna Unguiculata) as crops with most significant socio-economic expression. This practice is done with little or no use of agricultural supplies, such as lime and fertilizers, leading the region's lands, which already have ... The manual harvest of pepper fruits is difficult mostly due to the plants' low heights and the fruit's pungency, which causes irritation and burns the hands of harvesters. Such aspects partly explain the scarcity of labor for the pepper harvest. In addition, in the Brazilian and international market there are no jalapeño cultivars developed for mechanized harvesting. Therefore, this project aims at the development of new jalapeño cultivars adapted to mechanized harvest - with suitable plant arch ... The cultivation of winter forage crops such as Italian ryegrass ( Lolium multiflorum) and velvet grass ( Holcus lanatus) is of extreme importance for increasing the productivity and efficiency of livestock production in the South Region and part of the Southeast Region of Brazil. However, there are few cultivars for use by farmers. The problem focused in this project is the lack of improved cultivars of temperate forage grasses, productive and adapted to the Brazilian conditions. T ... The culture of black pepper ( Piper nigrum L.) is of great socio-economical importance in the northern states of Brazil, Pará especially. However, its production has been suffering the incidence of diseases such as the one caused by the Cucumber mosaic virus(CMV) and the Piper yellow mottle virs (PYMoV). Although these viruses have already been reported in many of the Brazilian states, there are too few studies that address the virus diseases which affect this culture. Hence, this project ... The recent expansion of sugarcane's culture by the mid-southern states of Brazil (Paraná, São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais - except the north, and Goiás), has been mostly happening on areas where degraded grasslands occur, characterized by eroded soils which are poor in nutrients, under distinct hydric regimes in regions of traditional sugarcane production. The incorporation of these flat topography areas enables mechanized harvesting and a more intensive soil use, with the eliminatio ... In last the two decades, the melon agribusiness in Brazil has expanded nine times, reaching a production that is estimated at 500,000 tons per year and is concentrated in the Northeast. Since 2007, melons have become the main national fruit in volume of exports, and in 2008 Brazil was the second top world exporter. Nearly all melon cultivars planted in the Northeast are imported, and hence there is demand for more adapted ones, as the cultivars available were generally developed in soil and clim Status: Completed Start date: Sun Apr 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2012 |
