One of the bottlenecks for the expansion of organic agriculture is the lack of nitrogen. A system that annually exports large amount of such nutrient with product harvests needs a continuous supply of the element to keep the system productive. However, organic production in Brazil cannot use nitrogen from synthetic sources, according to Law 10831, from 2003. Northern Ghana is the most important region of this African country for the production of cereals and legumes, but the soils are degraded and lack nitrogen and phosphorus, basic nutrients for the growth of such crops. Previous projects therein had proven that the use of quality inoculants can improve nodulation and increase grain production by 30% to 50%.
