Along with current demand for palm oil ("dendê" oil) by the industries of food, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and bio-fuel, it is important to encourage the advance of researches regarding handling techniques that allow longevity, increase in cultivated areas and productivity of the Palm Oil Tree ( Elaeis guineensis Jacq.). Selection for desirable phenotypes has been practiced in cattle since their domestication approximately 10,000 years ago. This process, alongside breed development and genetic improvement programs, has led to the vast diversity of cattle breeds known today. Traditional breeding methods, grounded in quantitative theory, have facilitated continuous genetic gains in most economically important traits. However, until recently, selection has been conducted without knowledge of the specific genes infl Status: Completed Start date: Tue Jan 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2019 |
Soy is one of the main commodities in national agricultural production, with Brazil being the world's largest producer, with a production of 135.4 million tons, productivity 3,517 kg/ha. With a planted area of 38.5 million hectares, it is still the world's largest exporter of the grain. Among the main producing states, Mato Grosso stands out as the largest Brazilian producer of soy, with production of 35.9 million tons, planted area of 10,374,861 hectares and productivity of 3492 kg/ha. In the last three seasons, the occurrence of grain and pod rot in the final stage of formation has been observed in soybean crops. The occurrence of this anomaly, so far, is located in the municipalities of the mid-northern region of Mato Grosso. This region corresponds to 31% of the soybean sown area in the state and reports of losses due to this problem ranged from 16% to 30% in the 2021/2022 harvest, a potential loss of 59 million bags. Taking the average value of a soybean bag of R$163.85 on Status: Completed Start date: Thu Sep 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2022 |
Bovine mastitis, which in most cases has S. aureus and S. agalactiae as causal agents, is an important disease in the livestock sector of Brazil due to losses it originates in the milk production chain and derivatives. In particular, S. aureus has a high zoonotic potential and is often associated as a cause of food poisoning outbreaks. Thus, controlling such microorganism in cows suffering from mastitis becomes crucial. However, this is an arduous task, since this bacteri ... Psyllids are small sap sucking insects with generally very narrow host plant ranges. Some of them are pests that cause major economic losses in agriculture, on ornamental plants and in forestry. They damage the plants by directly removing large quantities of sap or by the transmitting diseases. The chemical control of red gum lerp psyllids in eucalypt plantations in Brazil, for instance, costs millions of reais per year due to intensive use of insecticides. Another example is the transmission of Status: Completed Start date: Fri Mar 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2013 |
Rice and wheat are the two main sources of calories in the human diet, and both are important crops that are exported to the USA. Rice blast, which is caused by the Magnaporthe oryzae fungus, is a limiting factor for the global production of rice and constitutes a very serious emerging threat to wheat in the USA. Research on the disease in last the 20 years has provided a wealth of understanding on the molecular foundation for rice resistance to blast and on M. oryzae's pathogen ...Status: Completed Start date: Tue Jan 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2013 |
Selection for desirable bovine phenotypes has been practiced since the domestication of cattle, which occurred approximately 10,000 years ago. This process of domestication has brought about a marked change in behavioral and morphological characteristics in the subspecies and, together with the development of breeds and genetic breeding programs, has given rise to the enormous variety of patterns and racial types known today. Since then, traditional breeding tools, based on quantitative theory, Status: Completed Start date: Thu Jan 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2015 |
