The Cerrado is the second largest Brazilian biome and is considered one of the main biodiversity reserves on the planet that need to be conserved. For a rational and sustainable exploitation of this natural wealth, it is necessary to get to know it beforehand. A possible approach, from the point of view of the elaboration of products from Cerrado plants, is the use of aromatic species to obtain essential oils and extracts for application in the perfume and cosmetic industries. The main goal of this project was to conduct a systematic investigation of native Cerrado biome plant species, with the aim of exploiting Brazilian biodiversity resources in the fragrance industry. Dozens of plant species are being collected, classified and their essential oils are being extracted and analyzed. Such oils’ chemical compositions have been published in specialized scientific journals. For many of those species of plants, these are the first chemical data being published. The information thus obtained has been composing a database that will be available for public consultation. In this second phase of the project, the number of studied plant families increased and, in addition to the information from the chemical analysis, the olfactory characteristics of the extracts will also be investigated, aiming at applications in the perfume industry, as well as their biological activity against fungus and bacteria, which can lead to the obtainment of new herbal medicine products.
