Due to the importance of leguminous vegetables for human diets, the year of 2016 was declared by FAO the International Year of Pulses. Pulses are well appreciated in Brazil, and are consumed either fresh or in the form of processed products. Internal consumption has required frequent imports of such pulses; for peas and chickpeas alone, they represented US$ 14 million a year. The domestic market tends to expand due to the constant association of such foods with a series of attributes of high food quality, which includes the balanced presence of proteins, fibers, vitamins and nutraceutical elements (especially flavonoids, phytoestrogen and oleic and linoleic acids). Despite that, few and consistent works in the genetic improvement of pulses have been led by public and private companies in Brazil. The region of the Federal District has excellent conditions for the cultivation of such pulses. However, unlike in the past, when production of some of such pulses occurred, there is currently little being produced in the region. Thus, this project aims to strengthen the existing pea, lentil, chickpea and green bean germplasm collections at the Embrapa system and select promising genotypes for cultivation in the Federal District region, hence making alternatives for irrigated cultivation possible. This study comprises the introduction, multiplication, characterization and systematic documentation of accessions of such species, an indispensable effort to the breeding and genetic improvement programs for such pulses. The accessions will be assessed in terms of their agronomic and phenological aspects, nutritional qualities and resistance to the main diseases caused by fungi and nematodes.
