The epiteliochorial nature of pig placenta lines it against the transfer of maternal immunoglobulins to the embryo, and hence, the piglets depend on the ingestion of colostrum to acquire passive immunity. Colostrum is rich in immunoglobulins and in immune cells besides other bioactive compounds that jointly nourish and regulate biological functions. However, little is known about the role of some of these components, such as cytokines, for instance, which participate in the innate and adaptative Status: Completed Start date: Thu Feb 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2018 |
This project aims to contribute to improving the management, quality and biosafety of commercial egg-laying barns, through the implementation of best practices in production and in the training of technicians and farmers. It is aimed at smallholders and mid-sized family farmers whose egg production derives from hens raised in traditional aviaries (California-type layer cages). The main environmental problems associated with the waste produced in intensive pig farming are its high organic load, high amount of nutrients, the presence of some metallic species and of micro-organisms, some of which are known pathogenic agents. In general, the waste treatment systems in pig farms still lack the ability to reduce or eliminate pathogenic agents from the waste produced, a fact which makes it difficult to reuse the water in the very facility or even in agriculture. The infection of the swine herd with Salmonella and consequently, the presence of this micro-organism in swine products, has been a serious concern since it can be a great threat to the consumers themselves. Embrapa Swine and Poultry and UFRGS teamed up to develop tools and epidemiological studies that can characterize the problem, the contamination sources and the infection dynamics in the country's southern herds. This project aims to propose a systematic control of the Salmonella infection in Status: Completed Start date: Sat Sep 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2007 |
This project proposes to develop selected pure lineages of maternal traits for high reproduction performance, weight gain, longevity and functional structure: selected pure lineages of terminal paternal traits for high performance, weight gain, food conversion and meat quality; and to define usage strategies to optimize genetic material (crossbreeding to form matrices and slaughter animals) with this material's cost reduction to producers. The strategy is to develop technical cooperation contrac Status: Completed Start date: Wed Sep 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2010 |
The project addresses the limited supply of public and private technical assistance and rural extension in view of the large number of agricultural producers scattered throughout the national territory. Its general objective is to expand the access to quality technical assistance services by small and family-based producers of eggs and pigs, based on the development of easy-to-use digital tools. The project partners are Embrapa Swine and Poultry and Maneje Bem, a technology-based company that ...Status: In progress Start date: Sat Aug 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2020 |
Embrapa Swine and Poultry has developed production cost surveys and studies since the late 1980s, initially for swine and, since the 1990s, for broiler chicken. The aim of the project "Cost of Compliance" is to comparatively access the costs that farmers face to adjust to environmental legislation, and legislation on food security and animal wellfare, in order to project impact on competitiveness. The adoption of intensive pig farming systems brought economies of scale, greater productivity and logistic gains, but it increased the incidence of infections and animal stress levels, resulting in bouts of infectious diseases and making the use of antimicrobials in subtherapeutic or preventive doses necessary to promote growth and to mitigate the occurrence of diseases. Pig respiratory infections caused by influenza A viruses (FLUAVs) lead to significant economic losses and pose a threat to human health due to the possibility of pandemics. Although Brazil has one of the largest world's pig herds (41 million animals), there was little evidence of FLUAVs' presence in Brazilian pig herds before 2009. After detecting the H1N1 pandemic virus (H1N1/2009) in 2009, influenza surveillance efforts in Brazilian pig production increased. Consequently, new influenza viruses Status: In progress Start date: Tue Jan 01 00:00:00 GMT-03:00 2019 |
The characterization of alternative poultry production systems and its value chain is going to allow the identification of potential threats that affect the survival and productivity of fowl populations and provide opportunities for interventions in such systems.
