Brazil annually consumes 10.5 million tons of wheat, half of which is produced in the country, which entails an approximate outlay of 800 million dollars in wheat imports. The high cost of production and the difficulties in the obtention of cultivars with technological qualities that meet market requirements are among the main limiting factors for the Brazilian wheat production chain. Out of all the cultivars available from all Brazilian breeders, about two thirds were created from germplasm or cultivars that Embrapa developed. The proposed project aims to increase the competitiveness of national wheat in traditional regions (Brazilian South) and consolidate "tropical wheat" in new areas of Central Brazil by developing and identifying cultivars for baking and pasta-making purposes that can meet consumer demands and have resistance/tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. This project will be executed in seven states, by eight Embrapa Units, and will implement a new approach to the validation of protein and molecular markers and the use of microspore cultures for the production of new lineages in only two years. The lineages that demonstrate superior production performance and technological quality for uses that meet market demands will be multiplied, registered, protected, and recommended for cropping, and the information transferred to users, grain producers, and wheat processing industries. Expected impacts include better technological quality of the new wheat cultivars in the country; job generation in rural areas; currency savings due to the curb in wheat imports; and the social and scientific promotion of Embrapa. Embrapa will thus exercise its leadership in wheat research, contributing to higher stability and security in production and increasing national wheat's competitiveness through the supply of high technological quality cultivars that are adapted to production systems and to the market.
